Community Book Club Begins with Inspiring Discussion

The district’s first East Islip Community Book Club meeting was held on Oct. 20. Dr. Sarajean Anderson, the district's director of humanities, invited the community to come together for a discussion of the inspiring book “Out of My Mind” by author Sharon M. Draper. More than 50 students, teachers, parents, administrators and Board of Education members attended the book discussion.

Said Anderson, “A few of the participants summed up the experience with words like, ‘I loved seeing my teachers and hearing their thoughts on something other than school work,’ and ‘I really enjoyed talking with various people about the novel, as doing so made me love the book even more.’”

All members of the East Islip learning community – students, families, community members and school district staff – are invited to join in the next meeting, which will feature a shared reading of “Fish in a Tree” by Lynda Mullaly Hunt.  The event will take place on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 7 p.m. in the district office boardroom. If anyone would like to join the Book Club, please email Kathy Muller at or call 631-224-2147.
