Suffolk Zone Winners Set the Tone

Seniors Alexa Mattera and William Reed were recently named as East Islip winners of the 2015-2016 Suffolk Zone Awards, presented annually to the top male and female physical education students in each high school’s graduating class. Mattera and Reed were honored by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance at a Dec. 2 awards dinner at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge.

This school year, 58 high schools in the county were represented at the Suffolk Zone awards and 116 award recipients were chosen. The students were selected for contributing strongly to the overall positive tone of their physical education classes as well as the school. Among the criteria for the award are earning an A average or above 90 in high school physical education classes, achieving an overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the completion of junior year, demonstrating outstanding character and leadership qualities, and being a role model for good health and physical fitness.

“Alexa and Will are true leaders in their class and have made an impact,” said Athletic Director Stephen Restivo.
