Dear East Islip Community:

At approximately 6:38 a.m. this morning, the fire department was called to the high school due to a strong odor in the science hallway. The high school students and faculty were diverted to the middle school as per our emergency evacuation plan. Upon investigation, it was discovered that a motor in the univent in the science wing ceased, creating an odor. The high school students and faculty were all returned to the high school at approximately 7:20 a.m., at which time resumed back to a normal routine.

At this time, I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to our custodians, security guards, administrators, faculty and staff at both the high school and middle school for following our emergency procedures. Working together, they were able to ensure the health and safety of all of our students.

I would also like to take the time to thank the Islip Terrace Fire Department for their prompt response and professionalism. They are truly local heroes.

Although it is our hope that we never have to use our emergency procedures, today was a prime example of when everyone works together, we can work through any situation.

Sincerely,
John V. Dolan
Superintendent of Schools
