Timber Point Third-Graders “Spread the Bread” for the Hungry
In honor of national Make a Difference Day, third-graders at Timber Point Elementary School in East Islip held a “Spread the Bread” event on November 22. As the delicious scent of fresh-baked grain filled the hallways, students from the classes of Donna Beal, Lisa Fallon, Joan Stone, Christine Vaglica and Carol Wilson took turns making bread in the school’s kitchen with parent volunteers. The hearty loaves didn’t stay put, however, but were intended for delivery to Long Island Cares, Inc. - The Harry Chapin Food Bank.
“This program is really a community bread-giving campaign to help kids get into the spirit of giving and to spread goodwill to those in need,” said Stone. “For both bakers and recipients, ‘bread spreading’ promotes respect for the importance and dignity of each member of society.”
