A STEAMy Snowball Fight at Timber Point

On the first day of the winter season, students in Jennifer Giordano’s first-grade class at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School worked on a STEM project with “snowballs”.

The task entailed designing, building and attempting to knock down snow forts built from marshmallows. Students were given specific materials and then had to attempt the challenge. Their goal was to build a structure that would protect its resident from a “snowball” assault by a neighboring group. They observed pictures of snow forts, then worked together to plan and build their own successful structure.

“The children enjoyed the entire project, but their favorite part was getting to throw jumbo-sized marshmallows at the opposing group’s fort,” said Giordano.
