The girls varsity winter track and field team earned several medals at the League III championship meet on Jan. 28 at Suffolk West Community College indoor arena. With 51 total points, East Islip’s team finished in fifth place out of the nine schools that competed. “They did a great job for such a very young team,” said coach Mike Drozd.
Among the medalists were Faith Penny, who won the gold medal in the high jump as well as a fourth-place medal in the triple jump. Emma Hallowell won the silver medal in the high jump. In the 1500-meter race walk, Emily Francois won gold, Jamie Curren won bronze and Samantha Tavares won the sixth-place medal. Grace Revello earned a sixth-place medal in the 1000-meter run, while Quinn Favilla won the bronze medal in the 1500-meter run. The 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 teams all earned points with fifth-place finishes.


Visitors East Islip vanquished Smithtown West 69-50 on Jan. 28, led by Brian Bennett’s team-high 21 points (including seven field goals). Evan Maxwell also contributed strongly, scoring 10 points with 15 rebounds and nine assists, as did Ryan Hickey (17 points) and Steven Frost (15 points).


East Islip’s girls varsity basketball team pulled their record to .500 (4-4) with a 43-33 win over Smithtown West on Jan. 28. The team was led by freshman Katie Walsh, who scored a career-high 19 points, including 11 rebounds. Melissa Meyers also dominated, scoring 18 points.


On Jan. 27, East Islip fell at home to Smithtown East, losing 44-27. East Islip won in the following weight classes: 99, 106, 113, 220, 285.
