On Jan. 31 the boys varsity bowling team captured the Division I Large School Championship at East Islip Lanes, defeating teams such as Sachem East, Smithtown and Middle Country. Led by freshman Nick DeFazio, who averaged 253 for the day, East Islip won the title with a pinfall of 4,422 (1,165-1,095-1,000-1,162) for four games (a 220 average per bowler per game). Jacob Klein rolled a 257 game, Mike Kisssel a 246 and Jon Cheadle a 236.  

East Islip’s girls varsity team fell 47-27 to North Babylon on Jan. 31. High scorers were Deanna Reynolds and Elizabeth Vetter, both with 9 points.
The team rallied on Feb. 2, crushing Newfield 44-22 at home and evening their record at 5-5. Mariah Cullen led with 11 points. Deanna Reynolds had 7 points and 3 steals, while Mackenzie Houghton had 7 points and 4 rebounds.

On Jan. 28, East Islip’s JV girls beat Smithtown West 32-22. Eighth-graders Christina Talamo and Alexa Mattera scored 9 and 8 points respectively.
On Jan. 31, the team battled to the end but was defeated by North Babylon 46-33.  The leading scorers were Talamo and fellow eighth-grader Dylan Hirx.

With 10 seconds remaining in a Jan. 31 home game against North Babylon, East Islip’s Mike Simonetti hit two free throws, giving the 8-1 Redmen a 56-52 lead. The team hung on to win 56-55. Evan Maxwell scored 25 points with 17 rebounds, while Brian Bennett added 11 points.
East Islip improved their record to 9-1 on Feb. 2 with a decisive 61-31 win over home team Newfield. Maxwell scored 16 points (14 in the first half) and added 16 rebounds, while Bennett put 10 points on the board.
