Feb. 10 was Celebrity Read Aloud Day at John F. Kennedy Elementary School. Numerous "celebrity" readers – including the East Islip School District’s superintendent, assistant superintendents, administrators and members of the school board – took turns reading books to the children in different classrooms.
Board member Kim Phillips visited Nuala Quinlan’s classroom to read Mo Willem’s classic “Knuffle Bunny” to the kindergartners. Assistant Superintendent Alise Becker-Santa tackled “Stella Louella's Runaway Book” by Lisa Campbell Ernst, while Dan Friedman, the district’s director of data and technological services, aptly utilized an iPad to demonstrate how technology can aid in reading.
“Our students were truly inspired by our guest readers,” said JFK Principal Aileen O’Rourke. “They were exposed to new authors and titles. Our ‘celebrities’ really encouraged our students to become lifelong readers.”
