The East Islip School District’s Nutrition Committee honored seventh-grader Sarah Powell with East Islip's first Top Chef Award on Feb. 13.
The Nutrition Committee and Whitsons Culinary Group developed the Top Chef menu contest this year. Students in Patricia Emmons Fritz’s Family & Consumer Science Club at East Islip Middle School integrated nutrition and menu-planning skills with the school cafe menu. After learning about healthy menu-writing tips and the USDA’s My Plate recommendations, the students designed their own menus, judged by members of the committee.
Powell’s menu creation will be published and served in the March menu. She also received a certificate and a commemorative East Islip Top Chef hat.
“We hope that having the students involved with planning the school menu will prove a successful and fun way to educate them on healthy eating habits,” said PTA Council nutrition representative Sue Kavanagh.
