Marines Visit Middle School

Five Marines – returned from Afghanistan only a few weeks earlier – recently paid a visit to East Islip for both teaching sessions and social calls.

The day began with two hours of classroom interaction with students at East Islip Middle School, including a boys’ “boot camp,” followed by an in-service class for teachers to promote classroom support of the troops as a morale-boosting program.

Executive Officer Stephen Bartozsak of Centereach and Capt. Darren Wallace discussed their experiences in Afghanistan and answered numerous questions from the middle schoolers, while Cpl. Alex Leybovich and Staff Sgt. Brian Chavarez put the boys through an intense workout during physical education class.

First Sgt. Adam Sheinkin, a Long Island native, spoke to several classrooms before paying surprise visits to several teachers and staff members at East Islip High School, John F. Kennedy Elementary and Timber Point Elementary who had sent packages to the Marines as part of the district’s donation efforts.
