Five outstanding orchestra students at East Islip High School – cellist William Meehan, bassist Holly Alper, viola player Ethan Schaber and violinists Angelica Guercio and Carolyn Sidoti – were selected from among the top string players in Suffolk County to perform in the Long Island String Festival orchestra.
The quintet of East Islip musicians were selected by the Long Island String Festival Association (LISFA) based on their high scores at last spring's New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Solo Festival. “We are extremely proud of these students,” said orchestra director Susan W. Rydzeski.
At the Long Island String Festival, held in February at Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, the students performed a difficult program chosen from the string orchestra repertoire. David Wiley of the Long Island Philharmonic conducted the junior high orchestra and Dr. Kirk Moss of the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music conducted the senior high orchestra.
