As part of Nutrition Week, an unusually costumed creature roamed the cafeterias of East Islip’s elementary schools on Thursday, March 22 and Friday, March 23, courtesy of Whitsons Culinary Group.
Accompanied by his pal “Ranger Sue,” who talked about the importance of eating healthy, the friendly, furry Grant the Gazelle elicited delighted high-fives from the children while teaching them something important about nutrition.
“The children had a wonderful time,” said John F. Kennedy Elementary PTA’s First Vice President Susan Kavanagh, who portrayed the forest ranger . “It was great to see smiles on their faces and hear them naming healthy snacks.”
“Whitsons provided a fabulous lunchtime assembly on Friday regarding healthy eating,” said JFK Principal Aileen O’Rourke.
“Educating the children really works,” added Kavanagh. “While taking my sons to karate, I saw a little girl that recognized me from JFK. She said, ‘Hi Ranger Sue! Look! I'm eating a healthy snack,’ as she held up a snack bag of grapes.”
