Sports Results for Week of March 26, 2012

Following their 18-1 victory at Half Hollow Hills East on March 27, opening the 2012 baseball season, East Islip’s team went out the very next day and won their home opener against Hills East by a score of 19-2. Among the highlights were Dave Palmer pitching a complete game including four strikeouts, home runs from Billy Rombauts and Nick Calautti, and an impressive performance by Pete Hanaberg (3-for-3 with 3 runs and an RBI).

In their first game of the League III season, East Islip’s softball squad beat Half Hollow Hills East 14-2 at home on March 27, led by Kelsey Fileccia’s 4-for-5 batting performance (including 5 RBIs, 3 runs scored and a home run). During 5 innings, winning East Islip pitcher Heather Zenk allowed only 2 unearned runs on 4 hits.

Following a tough 10-9 opening loss to West Babylon on March 20 and a 15-10 defeat by Elwood-John H. Glenn High School on March 24, East Islip’s boys lacrosse team faced Ward Melville at home on March 27. East Islip lost 15-3, with goals scored by Tyre Brown, Tyler Rigo and Robert Sconone. Goalie Sean Sconone made 4 saves.  On March 29, the team visited Riverhead High School, falling 5-4 in overtime. East Islip’s scoring included 2 goals from Troy Revello, a goal and assist each from Rigo and Robert Sconone, and 2 assists from Joe Modica. Goalie Robert Rohan made 7 saves.
Following two tough losses to Massapequa on March 21 (13-11) and Northport on March 23 (9-5), East Islip’s girls lacrosse team bounced back to defeat Middle Country on March 28. The home game’s final score was 15-13, aided by Victoria Gregson’s 6 goals (4 tallied in the second half) and 1 assist. Other EI scorers included Nicole Levy ( 3 goals, 2 assists), Lisa Olen (3 goals, 1 assist), Jackie Niciforo (3 goals, 1 assist), Carlee Ancona (4 assists) and Shannon Cummings (2 assists).

After going 1-for-3 in their first few games (beating Central Islip 5-2 in the March 19 opener, but losing to Commack 6-1 on March 20 and to Walt Whitman 6-1 on March 22), East Islip’s boys tennis team resoundingly vanquished St. John the Baptist by 6-1 on March 26. In this non-league contest, Aiden McGovern and Mohammad Waqor defeated Jonathan Olsen and Tom Cilmi 7-5, 7-5 at second doubles. On March 27, East Islip visited West Islip and came away with a 4-3 victory. Terence Nixdorf and Ryan Hegarty beat Greg Nolan and Jared Sossin in the deciding match at first doubles, 6-3, 7-6 (2). East Islip then hosted Sayville on March 29, losing 4-3.
