Diabetes Fundraising Recognized

Last fall, Timber Point Elementary School fourth-grader and diabetes patient Emma Mendolia spearheaded local fundraising efforts for juvenile diabetes. The activities included a school assembly with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), organized by physical education teacher Mike Delia, and a diabetes walk that the entire school participated in.

“After being diagnosed with this disease, Emma's positive attitude has been inspirational for the faculty, staff and her peers at Timber Point,” said Delia.

In gratitude for Mendolia’s inspirational fundraising efforts that raised over $3,300 for juvenile diabetes research, the JDRF recently cut a $300 check to Timber Point and delivered a special banner to the school in recognition of Timber Point’s walk.

“We are so thankful for the overwhelming response of the East Islip community,” said her parents, Andrew and Vanessa Mendolia. “Through the efforts and coordination of Mr. Delia and Dr. Belz, the diabetes walk was a tremendous success. Emma was very excited and extremely proud to help raise money for other children who live with diabetes.”
