The high school’s Academic Team was undefeated this season, sitting in first place in their division and destined to become a leading force on Long Island before the pandemic brought an abrupt end to the 2020 season. Ranked seventh overall among 52 high schools from Nassau and Suffolk counties, the school’s junior varsity Academic Team was well-prepared and eager to compete in the finals this spring for the first time in East Islip history.

Long island Quiz Bowl hosts Academic Team regional competitions each month which feature trivia questions based on topics including literature, history, science, fine arts, religion, philosophy and politics.

“I have been a member of the Academic Team for the past four years,” said team captain and graduating senior Sean Colleary. “It has been an amazing experience, one that has enriched my high school career, and a wonderful opportunity to make new friends while engaging others in competition. Despite having my senior year cut short due to the pandemic, I am thankful for all the chances I have had to participate in the Academic Team. Anyone who wants to engage their mind and memory should try out and see how they shape up against the best minds of other schools.”

“This was a big victory for East Islip,” said adviser Lisa Rapiejko. “Even though the season was shortened, the hard work and dedication of our students brought them to top ranking on Long Island. It has been an honor to work with such dedicated, kind and remarkably talented young women and men.”
