On the 50th day of school, students arrived at Connetquot Elementary School dressed up as if it was the 1950s. The second graders also celebrated with root beer floats, connecting to Connetquot’s science curriculum as they identified the three states of matter. During the float experiment, the students observed the chemical reaction as root beer, a liquid that takes the shape of its container, reacted with solid ice cream and released carbon dioxide gas bubbles. The root beer tried to free up the air bubbles in the ice cream, creating a bubbly foam which rose to the top.
