East Islip High School competed in the annual Suffolk County Bar Association Mock Trial Tournament from Feb. 2 through March 23, finishing in the top four out of 30 schools.

The case was a criminal matter involving securities fraud. Students met with social studies teacher and mock trial coach Patsy Lester several days a week after school as well as Saturday mornings to prepare for the tournament. They also received professional coaching from attorney Brian Mitchell, who has been working with the team alongside Lester for 22 years. The team took turns as both prosecution and defense, going undefeated against St. Anthony’s, Deer Park, Sachem, Newfield, St. John’s and John Glenn before falling to Huntington by one point in the county semifinals. The semifinal round was argued in District Court before Judge Eric Sachs, who commended East Islip’s mastery of the case and their professionalism in the courtroom.

“I’m so proud of the way this team bonded and worked together through a very tough competition,” Lester said. “They inspire me with their dedication and team spirit.”
