Melissa Sconone, an East Islip High School Class of 2019 graduate currently playing lacrosse for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, won the NCAA Division 1 Women’s Lacrosse Championship on May 29.

North Carolina’s top-ranked Tar Heels finished the season 22-0, becoming the first undefeated national champion since 2017 (and 11th in NCAA history). They won their third national title with a 12-11 victory over Boston College in an exciting game held at Johns Hopkins University.

During her East Islip lacrosse career, Sconone served as team captain. Playing attack, she earned All-County and MVP designation in 2017 and 2018, was a member of the Under Armour highlight team and a Newsday Top 100 Player, won the 2017-2018 Suffolk Zone award, finished as one of the top 10 scorers in Suffolk County, was nationally ranked by “Inside Lacrosse” at No. 25, and participated in the Under Armour All America Underclass Tournament and U.S. Lacrosse Women’s Division National Tournament.
