Gianna Traeger, a second-grader in Maria Marinelli’s class at Connetquot, won first prize in this year’s Suffolk County Pool Smart poster contest. Legislator Tom Cilmi paid Traeger a surprise visit at Connetquot to announce her achievement, and presented her with a certificate.

Open to all elementary school students in Suffolk County, the contest promotes the importance of pool safety by requiring the students to create a poster titled “Be Pool Smart” that illustrates one or more of 10 different safety tips. One first-place poster is selected from all of the submitted entries, to be used as part of a countywide message from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services in its seasonal safety campaign.

“Gianna is a talented artist who made everyone so proud with her beautifully designed poster,” said Connetquot Principal Deborah Smith. “The poster will now be distributed throughout the county to remind everyone about taking every precaution when around a pool.”
