Six members of the middle school’s student government participated in the 36th annual Islip Elks Youth in Government Day on May 6, joining student representatives from other area schools to jointly learn about the Town of Islip and its government.

The students met with Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, and toured the MacArthur Waste to Energy facility and MacArthur Airport Fire-Rescue’s fire station, both at Long Island MacArthur Airport. The day’s festivities concluded with lunch at the O-Co-Nee East Diner Restaurant for lunch and the presentation of participation certificates.

“Our students were very enthusiastic about their day of learning how the town government makes citizens’ lives better,” said student government adviser Dawn Zeffiro.

After the event, the students were asked to write essays about what they had learned. Two of the middle schoolers in student government won the essay contest, with Anthony Marino winning first prize for sixth grade and Isabella Toto earning first for seventh grade.

Marino, Toto and Zeffiro attended the Elks Lodge’s Flag Day ceremony at Islip Town Hall on June 14, where the students were presented with certificates and $50 gift cards.
