High school basketball star Alexa Mattera recently scored her 1,000th career point as a varsity athlete, becoming only the fourth East Islip girls basketball player to ever reach that total. The point guard attained her momentous point during the Lady Redmen’s 57-41 victory over Deer Park on Feb. 9, which clinched the team’s Suffolk League IV playoff berth.

“It was really nerve-wracking,” said Mattera, a senior. “When I hit it, I wasn’t sure at first if I scored, but the team ran out to me while time was still on the clock. I felt like I accomplished my goal.”

An All-County athlete in basketball, field hockey and lacrosse, as well as winner of this school year’s Suffolk Zone Award for physical education leadership, she recently signed a letter of intent to play lacrosse this fall for Hofstra University, where she will study special education.

“I am very proud of her,” said coach John Caraccia. “To accomplish such a feat in just three-and-a-half seasons is astounding.”
