High school sophomore Jolie Lenox was chosen as the school’s 2016-2017 recipient of the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Award for her outstanding leadership skills and participation in community service. Representing East Islip, she will attend the HOBY New York Metro Leadership Seminar, a three-day conference held at Adelphi University in Garden City from June 9-11.

The award, open only to students in 10th grade, is sponsored every year by a donation from the Lions Club of the Islips. Lions Club representative Eugene Petraitis paid the school a visit to present a check to cover the expenses for Lenox to attend the seminar in June.

Founded in 1958 by civic-minded actor Hugh O’Brian, HOBY’s mission is to inspire a global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. Programs like the Adelphi seminar provide selected students with unique leadership training and motivation-building experiences.

“We congratulate Jolie and know she will make East Islip proud,” said her guidance counselor, Jennifer Salvaggio.
