Girls Basketball Team Celebrates Senior Day, Lady Legends Inductions and Playoff Success
East Islip High School senior basketball players Kaelyn Gordon, Sara Simonetti and Grace Williamson celebrated their Senior Day on Feb. 1. Their accomplishments include two league titles and a trip to the county finals.
“Collectively, they have spearheaded a renaissance of the program with their dedication and stellar play,” coach Michael Petre said.
Simonetti, East Islip’s all-time leader in three-pointer, celebrated becoming the fifth member of the 1,000 Point Club in the history of the East Islip girls basketball program during a win over John Glenn High School on Jan. 13.
East Islip is currently 17-4 overall and 13-2 in League 3 play. After qualifying for their fourth consecutive trip to the playoffs, the team beat visiting Sayville 50-47 on Feb. 17 in a thrilling overtime playoff game, sending them to the semifinals. They next face Centereach on Feb. 22. Tickets to the noon game will be sold at the door (students pay $5 with school ID) and are also available in advance here.
In other program news, four East Islip High School girls basketball alumni were inducted into the East Islip Lady Legends Club during this winter season: Class of 2022 graduate Jessica Peluso, an All-Long Island player who helped lead the team to an appearance in last year’s county finals, and who is currently attending the University of Colorado on a lacrosse scholarship; Class of 2020 graduate Gia Gremaux, a League 3 Player of the Year who as a senior, helped lead East Islip to its first league title in 15 years; Class of 2016 graduate Alexa Mattera, an All-County player and member of the 1,000 Point Club; and Class of 2003 graduate Cheri Davis, who attended Stony Brook University on a basketball scholarship.
