East Islip Interact Club Donates to Rotary’s Gift of Life

  • Juniors and seniors from East Islip High School’s Interact Club were recently invited to attend a meeting of the Rotary Club of Islip and speak about the Interact Club’s many community service projects this year. Guided by adviser Lisa Rapiejko, the students had raised $250 for families in need by holding a bake sale after school, and presented the check to Rotary’s Gift of Life International.

“Rotary’s motto, ‘Service Above Self’, is an important part of our Interact Club and is the reason why we chose to donate to this important organization,” Interact Club Co-President Joan Munoz said. “Gift of Life provides lifesaving heart surgery to children born in countries that cannot provide treatment.

During the Rotary meeting, the students also shared their experiences as participants in Rotary Youth Leadership Association, an educational weekend retreat supported by Rotary’s fully paid scholarships. At RYLA, students learn leadership skills and character development through workshops and seminars.

“It’s a lifechanging experience that has helped me to become a leader,” Interact member Emma Johnson said.
