Boys Winter Track Team Takes First County Championship
In a memorable meet on Feb. 3, East Islip High School’s boys winter track team won the first Suffolk County championship in school history.
East Islip started the tournament, held at Suffolk Credit Union Arena at Suffolk Community College’s Brentwood campus, with Jake Sambo finishing fourth in the 55-meter hurdles. In the triple jump, James Terhune took fourth place and Julani Ellis finished fifth. In shot put, Charlie Heffernen captured third place, setting a school record with a throw of 48 feet, 7 inches. In the long jump, Julani Ellis jumped an impressive 21 feet, 3 inches to earn second place. The 4x200 relay team of Ellis, Chris Maynard, Aidan McConnell and Sambo finished in fifth place, Joseph Norrby won second place in the 600-meter run, setting a school record of 1.23.44, and also won the high jump, making him a three-time winner in the latter event. In the 300-meter dash, Jack Kalinowski ran his personal best of 36.9 to finish fifth. Senior and captain Matt McIntee won the 300-meter dash, beating the No. 1 seed with an impressive time of 35.31. To cap off the championship, the 4x400 relay team lit up the track, dominating the competition. McConnell began the relay, Norrby opened the lead and Kalinowski came flying through to hand the baton off to McIntee, who ensured that nobody would pass him.
“Congratulations to all the boys on their championship, and good luck to everyone competing in the state qualifier on Feb. 13,” assistant coach Nicole O’Connor said.
