New York State Portrait of a Graduate (POG) Adoption
At the July 2025 meeting of the New York State Board of Regents, the Board formally adopted the New York State Portrait of a Graduate (POG), a major milestone of the NY Inspires initiative. The POG serves as a unifying statewide vision for what it means to be a successful high school graduate in New York. It outlines the essential skills, knowledge, and mindsets students should develop to be prepared for college, careers, civic responsibilities, and life beyond high school.
Key points regarding the adoption include:
- No changes to current graduation requirements have been made at this time.
- The Portrait of a Graduate will become a statewide expectation beginning with students entering Grade 9 in the 2029–2030 school year.
- The New York State Education Department (NYSED) will release additional implementation guidance by Summer 2027 to support districts in aligning instruction, programs, and experiences with the POG framework.
East Islip School District will continue to share updates and resources as they become available to ensure our community remains informed and prepared for this important statewide initiative.
