Guided by teacher Christina Spera-Bartlett, second graders in Connetquot Elementary School’s art classes recently explored an advanced artistic technique called grid enlargement, using it to create oversized drawings of candy bars. The project encouraged problem-solving, critical thinking, mathematical reasoning and teamwork as students worked together to creatively scale up their images.

To make the experience interdisciplinary, the artwork project was paired with a music lesson in which students learned about rhythm by keeping the beat to the name of their chosen candy bar, bringing art and music together in a engaging way.
