Important programs and dedicated students were at the forefront for recognition at the East Islip School District’s Dec. 12 Board of Education meeting.

First up for recognition was East Islip High School’s SADD club, led by adviser Bridget Lopiccolo and President Florence Gonzalez.

“We visited every fifth grade class in our school district, and were able to speak to the students about making good decisions, as well as discussing the hazards of drugs and alcohol,” Gonzalez said.

SADD members also asked each fifth grader to design a ribbon with an anti-drug slogan. The winners of this year’s Red Ribbon contest were announced as Padma Marin (“Drink Water Not Drugs”) of Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School and Mason Schulze (“123 Be Drug Free”) of John F. Kennedy Elementary School.

“We’re very proud of our winners and the SADD members who help educate these younger students,” Lopiccolo said.

Next, the district’s Career and Technical Education program – encompassing the departments of business, family and consumer science, technology and cosmetology, and such focus areas as robotics, video production, woodworking, auto repair and culinary arts – was highlighted, led by Director of Careers and Student Services Jason Stanton. Students enrolled in these crucial programs came up to the podium to speak about their experiences in CTE and how it has enhanced their education and future career plans.
