East Islip High School held its most successful districtwide Thanksgiving food drive to date, collecting more than 200 turkeys and thousands of pounds of nonperishable food. Over 100 students from eight different clubs and organizations worked together on the two-part initiative, which is sponsored annually by the National Honor Society.
The district is divided into 49 geographical zones, with each student group responsible for one area. From Nov. 13–16, students canvassed over 7,000 households in the community, delivering flyers to announce the upcoming collection. On Nov. 19, from 5–7 p.m., they returned to each home where a flyer had been left, gathering donations of canned goods, boxed items and turkeys.
“It is such a beautiful way to begin the holiday season,” National Honor Society adviser Nicole Ingram said. “Our community is the best there is. The food drive becomes more successful every year, and it is truly humbling to witness what can be achieved when we all come together.”
