Second graders in Leslie Davis’ STEAM class at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School recently rolled into hands-on learning during a field trip to United Skates of America in Seaford. While at the rink, students participated in a unique STEM lesson by dismantling and reassembling a roller skate to explore how each part functions. They also investigated the concept of friction and discussed how different surfaces impact a skate’s movement. To cap off the experience, students showcased their creativity by designing a new feature for a roller skate. After enjoying a pizza lunch, the class hit the rink and had a blast putting their learning into motion.
