The East Islip School District recognized East Islip High School seniors Ryan Flad and Meeghan Mahon at the Nov. 7 Board of Education meeting for being named Commended Students in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are two of only 34,000 Commended Students recognized nationwide for their exceptional academic achievement. Their high scores place them among the top 50,000 of students who took the 2023 PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Also honored at the meeting was Timber Point Elementary School and first grade teachers Michelle Kilkelly and Carolyn McGee for coordinating the school's St. Jude Math-a-Thon, which has been raising money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for 22 years. This year, the school raised $22,314, and they have raised $280,765 to date, making Timber Point the fourth largest fundraising school for St. Jude in the nation.
