East Islip High School recently announced the winners of the American Math Competition’s AMC 10 and AMC 12, the nation’s leading mathematics competitions for high schoolers. These exams are designed to cultivate the mathematical capabilities of the next generation of problem-solvers.

Sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America, the AMC 10 and AMC 12 are 25-question, 75-minute, multiple-choice examinations in high school math. The AMC 10 is for students under the age of 17.5 and in 10th grade or below, and covers the high school math curriculum up to 10th grade. The AMC 12, for students under the age of 19.5 and in grades 12 and below, covers the entire high school math curriculum, including trigonometry, advanced algebra and advanced geometry.

East Islip’s AMC 10 first-place winner was Kaylee Carberry, followed by Eric Li and Joseph Cardillo. The school’s AMC 12 first-place winner was James Terhune, followed by Viki Li, Ryan Flad, Vanessa Rossa and Jake DeLisi.

“On behalf of the East Islip Mathematics Department, congratulations to the winners on their mathematical excellence,” Math and Science Director Dr. John Genova said. “We’re grateful for the opportunity and support to provide this national contest to our students. We look forward to continuing this tradition.”
