Students from East Islip High School’s Peer Support Leadership Club recently attended the Suffolk County High School Principals’ Association’s Compassion Without Borders student leadership conference, hosted by Commack High School. The event focused on empowering student leaders through motivational speaker Gian Paul Gonzalez’s “All In” philosophy, which challenged participants to fully commit to their school communities and their roles as emerging leaders. The keynote presentation encouraged students to reflect on what it truly means to be “All In” each day.

“Our students were deeply moved by Gonzalez’s message that leadership is not a title, but a daily choice to positively influence the people around them,” teacher Genesis Dawson said. “They shared that the message was both inspiring and grounding, reminding them that even small, consistent actions can strengthen a community.”

Following the presentation, students and teachers participated in small breakout groups alongside peers from schools across Suffolk County. These sessions provided opportunities to exchange ideas, discuss challenges and collaborate on strategies to foster meaningful student involvement. Participants also shared traditions and practices that strengthen their school communities while gathering new ideas to bring back to their own campuses.

“The experience was truly transformative for our attendees,” Dawson said. “They returned energized and ‘All In’ on continuing their leadership journey, committed to taking concrete steps to support one another, uplift their peers and further strengthen our school culture. The students are especially excited to bring some of the innovative activities they learned about into this year’s Awareness Weekend, tentatively scheduled for the end of February. We are proud of the way they represented East Islip and look forward to seeing how they apply these ideas to make an even greater impact.”
