East Islip kicked off its three-day FTK Carnival with a memorable opening ceremony on Sept. 19, highlighting student-musicians from John F. Kennedy Elementary School and Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School. In keeping with tradition, chorus students began the ceremony by singing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” followed by string students playing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” The performances were organized by Mark Bernard, the retired East Islip High School principal now serving as the district’s interim art and music director.

The annual event, held by the For the Kids Foundation on the grounds of Timber Point Elementary School, provides a celebratory weekend for the district’s families featuring numerous games, rides and treats.

“Thank you to our RCK and JFK scholars for such a beautiful performance,” Superintendent Paul Manzo said.

“The Carnival’s opening ceremonies are an important tradition for our organization and set the tone for the exciting weekend ahead,” FTK President Cheryl Pepe said. “We are incredibly grateful to the talented students of RCK and JFK for sharing their wonderful musical gifts, which would not have been possible without the dedication and guidance of their music teachers. A special thank you goes to Mr. Bernard for ensuring that the students were showcased beautifully for the families and friends who came out to support them.”
