In an exciting intersection of creativity, culture and clay, professional artist, sculptor and potter Cliff Mendelson recently brought another interactive Day in Clay workshop to fifth graders at John F. Kennedy Elementary School and Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School. In this hour-long, hands-on ceramic arts program, students explored Native American vessel making and design.

Mendelson first shared his expertise as he demonstrated the art of creating pottery on a wheel, providing the students with knowledge concerning how vessels are designed and their connection to various cultures as giving them a firsthand experience involving a working craftsman. The fifth graders then created their own individual clay vessels using the style, symbols and techniques of Native American artists.

“It is always an inspiration for me to see the faces of the students and their sense of accomplishment as they learn to transform a simple lump of clay into a beautiful work of art in just 60 minutes,” Mendelson said. “The students’ dedication and enthusiasm were incredible to see. This kind of hands-on engagement is a refreshing break from the digital world, making their experience even more meaningful. Their pieces went above and beyond, and their focus, respect and excitement made this program a truly enriching experience, one that not only fostered artistic skills, but also explored connections to a culture rich in patterns and imagery.”
