Three pillars of the East Islip School District – East Islip High School Principal Mark Bernard, PTA Council President Cheryl Pepe and Board of Education trustee Christopher Zachry – were recognized at SCOPE’s 24th annual School District Awards Dinner, held March 24 at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook.

Bernard was the recipient of the Administrator Service Award. He has been dedicated to the district for 22 years, first as math director, then East Islip Middle School principal and currently as principal of the high school.

“Throughout his tenure, Mark has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, fostering a student-centered environment, enhancing academic achievement and advocating for innovative educational practices,” Superintendent Paul Manzo said. “His commitment to supporting faculty development, implementing effective programs and nurturing strong community partnerships has greatly contributed to our district's success.”

Pepe, a resident of East Islip for over 20 years, community member, parent and business owner, received the Community Service Award. In her role as president of the PTA Council, Pepe works with six PTAs to ensure students have the resources they need to thrive. She also serves as president of the For the Kids Foundation of East Islip, raising vital funds to enhance school programs, and as a parent member on East Islip's interview committees, actively shaping the district’s future.
“Cheryl’s dedication, selflessness, generosity and passion for education make her a cornerstone of our community,” Manzo said.

Zachry received the School Board Service Award. He has served on the East Islip Board of Education since July 2014, holding various leadership roles including president, vice president and trustee, as well as serving on numerous committees to ensure the district’s success.

“Over the past decade, Chris has demonstrated unwavering commitment to the students, families and staff of the district,” Manzo said. “As a board member, he has been instrumental in setting district policies, approving budgets and advocating for academic, extracurricular and infrastructural improvements that benefit students. His decisions consistently prioritize the well-being and educational growth of all students. Chris’s vision, dedication and tireless volunteerism embody the core values of school board service.”
