Meet East Islip’s 2026 Valedictorian and Salutatorian

East Islip High School’s Class of 2026 valedictorian and salutatorian are Liam Eichler and Angel Mai, respectively. The two students’ accomplishment was announced by Principal Anthony Montemarano on April 28, with proud family members in attendance.

Eichler and Mai were both named AP Scholars with Distinction and will graduate as AP Capstone Diploma recipients.

A Commended Student in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program, Eichler serves as president of the National Honor Society, and captain of the Academic Team and varsity cross-country and tennis teams. As a junior, he was named the winner of the Rensselaer Medal, recognizing excellent academic achievement.

“I wasn’t really looking to have the title of valedictorian,” Eichler said. “I just try to put an effort into whatever I do at school, and I am happy I received some recognition.”
  
He is considering attending Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh to pursue architecture and business.

Mai serves as ex officio Board of Education member, co-president of the Science Honor Society, vice president of the Class of 2026 and student government secretary, and is a member of the National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society and World Language Honor Society.

“I am really surprised to be named salutatorian, but I’m happy and grateful,” Mai said.

Mai has not decided on a college yet, but plans to pursue nursing, with the goal of becoming a registered nurse and eventually a certified registered nurse anesthetist.
