Students at John F. Kennedy Elementary School got a firsthand look at the world of weather and broadcasting during a special visit from News 12 meteorologist Rich Hoffman on March 11.
Hoffman, who has been with News 12 for 24 years and also teaches at Farmingdale State College, shared his enthusiasm for tracking weather systems and his journey toward a career in television. During his presentation, held in the school cafeteria, he displayed charts and a weather balloon, ad explained how meteorologists study and predict the weather while encouraging students to pursue their interests and follow their dreams.
The session concluded with an engaging question-and-answer segment where students had the opportunity to ask about topics such as storms, winter weather and forecasting. To thank their guest, the entire third grade presented Hoffman with a handmade thank-you card, showing their appreciation for an informative and inspiring visit.
Also in attendance was East Islip High School senior Stephen Foray, who will be studying meteorology at SUNY Oswego next year. Foray had the opportunity to discuss college and career advice on the meteorology field with Hoffman.
“This was a tremendous lesson about what it means to be fascinated with the weather,” Principal Dr. Deborah Smith said. “We learned so much and were all so grateful for Mr. Hoffman’s visit.”
