East Islip High School junior Jose Pineda, a Junior Commissioner in the Keep Islip Clean program, recently led a successful community cleanup in collaboration with the school’s Environmental Club, the Science Honor Society and a group of dedicated students from Genesis Dawson’s Living Environment classes. The event covered approximately one mile, starting at the bridge over Sunrise Highway, continuing up Craig B. Gariepy Avenue, past the front of the high school and middle school buildings, and ending at the EI Pride monument near the Southern State walkover bridge. The hardworking volunteers collected nearly 40 pounds of litter, demonstrating their commitment to environmental stewardship and school pride. Their efforts not only beautified the area but also reinforced the importance of environmental responsibility and student leadership.
